Jean Carne* – We got some catching up to do (GPF)

I like this so much it almost feels wrong to suggest it is a guilty pleasure. But it has the kind of dancefloor friendly sound that is perfect for a Friday night.

Jean Carne is from Atlanta and released this gem on the seminal Philadelphia International label, home of some sensational soul, funk and disco.

Third Eye Blind* – Semi-charmed life (GPF)

Apologies for the interruption to normal blogging service. I am back from Barcelona and just about in one piece. It’s a fun city, if a little sketchy. I did manage to find some time to relax too, which was welcome. I could get used to chilling by the water and enjoying the sunshine!

This is a song that reminds me of school. If the mark of a good song is that it makes you want to hum the tune after hearing it then this qualifies in spades.

Brownstone* – If you love me (GPF)

I heard this a few weeks ago and have been meaning to post it since. It is so darn catchy. I know it’s a bit naff but it is from the mid-90’s sweet spot for which I am an utter sucker!

Brownstone are (was going to write were but then just discovered via their wikipedia page that they have reformed) an all girl group from LA. I have to confess knowing exactly nothing about them beyond this song, but what a song it is!

Have a great weekend.

Dr.Hook* – When you’re in love with a beautiful woman (GPF)

Another classic to round off the week. What a great video! Could it be more 70’s?

This is just so silky smooth, I particularly like the backing vocals. I can’t help but smile whenever I hear it.

Can’t believe it’s September tomorrow…

Color me Badd* – I wanna sex you up (GPF)

I know this is naff, but the vocals. The vocals. There is something about the harmony that is irresistible. Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers for the 90’s? Just a somewhat different subject matter!

Also, how 90’s is the video? LOVE it…

Have a great weekend!

Frankie goes to Hollywood* – Relax (don’t do it) | (GPF)

I heard this played during the opening ceremony of the Olympics and it reminded my (guiltily) about how much I enjoyed it. I think it is the relentless bass that does it for me. Pretty classic 80’s video here too. White gloves!!

Ashanti* – Foolish (GPF)

I can’t believe this is 10 years old! It still sounds as smooth as ever. As I’ve said before I’m just a sucker for music from this era of R’n’B. It takes me back!

The reason I thought of it today is that I was messing about on youtube earlier and came across this DeBarge track which is sampled here.

Spandau Ballet – Gold (GPF)

Short post at the end of a long day and week.

Had to be this right? A special olympic-themed guilty pleasure Friday. I hope you are enjoying the games as much as I am. Here’s to Team GB bringing home a few more golds.

N-Trance* – Set you free

I have been wanting to post this since I revisited JX, another classic of the genre (mid-90’s cheesy, up tempo dance). If these two don’t make you want to jump around the room, I’m not I will be able to help you. They have the added lustre for me of being reminders of some happy and carefree schooldays.

I had a successful (and surprisingly sun kissed) morning in Dublin. As of Wednesday I will be a resident of Ranelagh, Dublin. Hope you have a great weekend.

Eve featuring Gwen Stefani* – Let me blow ya mind (GPF)

I heard this last Friday night when I was out having a few leaving drinks. I was reminded of what a great tune it is. What a rare treat to hear an all female hip hop tune.
Two other things stand out on this track; First, the amazing hook, hitting you right from the start, it is infectious and makes me want to move. Secondly, the video has a certain kitschy charm. Particularly as Eve rhymes to the camera while driving what appears to be a souped up quad bike!
