Cheryl Lynn* – Got to be real (GPF)

This is the definition of a feelgood track. Classic disco, with ridiculous over the top vocals. As I try to get myself in the mood for a very early flight to Barcelona this is putting a smile on my face and setting the correct tone. Hopefully it will be a fun (if almost certainly hectic) weekend.

Sorry if there is an interruption to normal service while I am away. I will try to find an internet cafe but that might be a challenge! If not I am back Tuesday so will get caught up then. See you on the other side.

Got to be REEAAALLL

Catatonia* – Road Rage

It’s been a while since I have felt so utterly beat on a Friday night, it has been a long week. It is however nice to be back home in my parent’s house. I am back in Ireland for the weekend to attend the European Cup semi final tomorrow. Hopefully Ulster can do it and make the final. It will be my first trip to the Aviva stadium and I am pretty excited. It strangely feels a little like Christmas Eve!

This is a real blast from the past, a big hit from my school days. Catatonia, whose other big hit was a classic 90’s reference – Mulder and Scully. Remember the X-files? Now that takes me back.

This is taken from the time when Welsh bands ruled the world with these guys, Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers and Super Furry Animals in the vanguard.

Cerys Matthews, the impish lead singer now presents an eclectic Sunday morning show on 6music. How does anyone else feel about singers with strong accents? I think I kind of like the rolled R’s here.

Cause you and I know it’s all over the front page. You give me road rage racing through the best days…

Brandy and Monica* – The boy is mine (GPF)

Sometimes you can’t escape your past. As much as I wish it weren’t true I am a total sucker for 90’s R’nB. In my defence I fell for it before I knew any better. It is the Kryptonite to my musical Clark Kent.

This is so slickly produced, just listen to the strings! To think that Brandy and Monica were once so famous they could both go by their first names only. I suspect that it may no longer be the case…

You can say what you wanna say, what we have you can’t take. From the truth you can’t escape, I can tell the real from the fake…

Wham! – I’m your man (GPF)

Sorry for late post, I’ve been MIA at a family reunion for the past 36 hours.

The event culminated in a big, wedding style shindig. There was a wedding band that was trashy and glorious in just about equal parts. They played this at one point and I was unable to fight my inexplicable weakness for Wham! and George Michael.

This track and video (hello black leather gloves!) couldn’t be more perfectly 80’s.

But where we’re going baby, there ain’t no such word as no…

Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive (GPF)

I was going to post some more 90’s R’n’B today but I held off as I perhaps have been going a little overboard with it recently.

This is classic disco. Also, what a great video! It’s hard to be a bit of walking in unison.

Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk I’m a woman’s man, no time to talk…

Diddy – Dirty Money* – Ass on the floor (GPF)

This is defiant. I guess that is the point of posting “guilty pleasures” on Fridays. I know this is interminably naff but it still inexplicably moves me.

Them haters can’t tell you nothing…

Shola Ama* – You might need somebody

In a humorous moment on Saturday we got a taxi to the stadium before the game. I asked the driver if he had any music he could play. He said “no worries boss, look in the glove compartment”. I found a stash of CD’s – 9 of Pakistani music and the single version of this! An interesting selection to say the least.

It is a little saccharine but I have to confess all 4 of us were humming the tune until we heard Ireland’s call before the start of the game.

Bran Van 3000* – Drinking in LA

This takes me back! I remember it from innocent school days and Rolling Rock adverts. It is infectious and funky and I remember finding the slightly off beat sound intriguing even back then when I didn’t have any idea what music meant.

Bran Van 3000 had the honour of featuring the final recording of legend (and hero of mine) Curtis Mayfield before his death on their single Astounded. There, I just hit you with some knowledge!

What the hell am I doing drinking in LA at 26?….

This is for a supporter and follower of the blog. You know who you are. Cheers for the encouragement, even if it is indirect.

Bucketheads* – The Bomb! (GPF)

Classic 90’s dance tune. It reminds me of being a teenager. I heard it last night while out on the tiles in Brixton with a few old friends. Great sample and a funny video here to match.

These sounds fall into my mind…

TLC* – No Scrubs (GPF)

I am not too proud of my affection for this song but I guess that’s the name of the game on Fridays. In my defence when I first heard it I wasn’t old enough to know better. In fairness it has stood the test of time pretty well. Apart perhaps for the ridiculous, OTT video!

Also, TLC must be an all-time great name for a modern R’n’B group.
