Neneh Cherry* – Buffalo Stance (GPF) (Helen Chandler guest post)

I know very little about Neneh Cherry – she wasn’t really on my childhood music radar, except with ‘7 Seconds’ which was played on the radio a lot in 1994. Buffalo Stance is a song I came across much later – but I instantly felt like it reminded me of something.

I’ve heard it a lot over the last few years and it seems to be experiencing a resurgence. A quick search for the track on YouTube reveals that it’s currently being used as the intro music for Jamie Oliver’s 30 Minute Meals. That made me re-think posting it, but let’s be clear – I love it in spite of Jamie Oliver, not because of him.

Parts of the song still sound amazing – the main hook is kind of melancholy in a way that only ’80s music can be and the beat is one of those that sounds fresh in a retro sort of way. The lyrics and the ‘scratching’ have dated the track a bit, but I love Neneh’s attitude.

This fits really nicely into a Friday afternoon playlist full of ’80s and ’90s classics or brightens up a dull Monday. Enjoy it with mug of tea and a Fruit ‘n Nut.

Dee Lite* – Groove is in the heart

At a really old friend’s wedding today so I wanted to post something that I might hear later on. This is classic wedding reception fodder…

Nelly Furtado – Do it (GPF)

I am going for a trip down memory lane this evening catching up with some people I met during my year in Berkeley. I thought it apt to post something that I listened to (guiltily!) when I was there. I like it for more than just the video, seriously.

Have a great weekend.

Michael Jackson – Man in the mirror (Hed Kandi remix) (GPF)

This is a bit cheesy but I kind of like it’s energy. The reason I was reminded of it was that I shared a enjoyable couple of pints with a fellow blogger tonight. They mentioned an entry they had posted “revealing” the fact that Michael Jackson is in fact Nani’s father. Outlandish and humourous stuff!

I’m starting with the man in mirror…

Royce da 5’9* – Boom (GPF)

This mid-90’s Hip Hop banger from Detroit rapper Royce da 5’9 is one of my favourite party tunes. The beat is provided by hip hop legend and genius producer DJ Premier.

I am over in London for the weekend for a friend’s birthday and hope to hear some stuff like this tonight. This is for you Jimmy, here’s to a good night!

Huey Lewis and The News* – The power of love (GPF)

This is just a classic 80’s track. I stumbled across this video on the internet a few weeks ago and it reminded me of this. Nike are so clever. I don’t think Kevin Durant should give up his day job yet though!

I was also struck by the cyclical nature of style. If I was to go out wearing a pair of Nike high tops and a red body warmer I would probably look pretty fly, Marty McFly in fact.

Don’t need money, don’t take fame, don’t need no credit card to ride this train…

Earth, Wind and Fire* – That’s the way of the world (GPF)

Classic smooth 70’s track from Disco titans Earth, Wind and Fire.

Salt-n-Pepa featuring En Vogue* – Whatta Man (GPF)

This is rather cheesy (it is Friday) but has an irresistible groove. I have to confess that I was out for a run (don’t laugh) during the week and when this came on my MP3 player it put a spring in my step.

Hall and Oates – Sara Smile (GPF)

I’m not sure that really feel all that guilty about this. It is nice and chilled out. My Friday choices seem to oscillate between riotous and mellow depending on the weekend ahead and preceding week. Given how busy the past few days have been I am certainly leaning towards the latter today.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Dropkick Murphys* – Drink and fight (GPF)

I know this is lacking in substance but I thought it was fitting given the weekend I just had (minus the fighting part). I like the energy.
