I have been unable to get this track out of my mind for several weeks. Van Morrison is an utterly masterful live performance. While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of Rave on John Donne or Make it real one more time it is still spectacular.

Punk was at its height in 1978 when The Stranglers released the ‘Black and White‘ album. Anarchy was the order of the day. Here the Stranglers were thumbing there noses at Burt Bacharach and Hal David syrupy love songs, and turned it into a guitar driven rant, with an admittedly a long slightly indulgent solo.
Of course they also recorded ‘Golden Brown’ a syrupy love song to heroin. It is not recorded what Burt Bacharach made of this version but I suspect its not going into his desert island discs…

Between one thing and another the past couple of weeks have been rather stressful. As a result I have found myself gravitating to more mellow music. This meandering, dreamy number from Van Morrison, taken from 1972’s Saint Domoinic’s Preview, did just the trick today.

This is a great live recording of Stax legend Carla Thomas taken from the 1972 Wattstax music festival which took place in The LA Colluseum. It is probably my favourite track of hers (the also excellent album version is here)

This is another track from a Jamaican reggae legend. It is a cover of a 70’s disco track from Heatwave, but I prefer this version.
