Delegation* – Oh Honey

I have to give credit for the discovery of this awesomely smooth 70’s number to the guys over at the excellent Far From Cyan blog. They posted it a couple of weeks ago and I have had it on a loop since.

Delegation were a UK band who came to prominence in the 70’s, releasing this in 1978.

Thin Lizzy – Whiskey in The Jar

CjK Guest Post – Summer Cover #13

It is Phil Lynott fabulous guitar intro that lets you know that this is not going to be a a traditional version of ‘Whiskey in the Jar’. It was however a well known traditional song set in the southern mountains of Ireland, with specific mention of counties Cork and Kerry.  The song is about a Rapparee (Highwayman), who is betrayed by his wife or lover, and is one of the most widely performed traditional Irish songs. The then relatively unknown Irish rock band Thin Lizzy hit the Irish and British pop charts with this version of the  song in 1973, launching a very successful career until Phil died in 1986 aged 36, although still remembered in a statue just off Grafton Street.

Santana* – Black Magic Woman

CjK Guest Post – Summer Cover #12

When you think about ‘Black Magic Woman’ I suspect you do not think about Fleetwood Mac. This song was written by Peter Green that first appeared as a Fleetwood Mac single in various countries in 1968.  In 1970, it became a classic hit by Santana, as sung by Gregg Rolie, on their Abraxas album. The outstanding guitar work and slinky vocals on this make it everyone’s go to version.

Dee Edwards* – I Can Deal With That

I stumbled across this track from Detroit singer Dee Edwards over the weekend and it’s silky smoothness has been on my mind since. It has also been way too long since I posted some soul.

Bob Dylan – Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door

I heard this on the radio earlier and was reminded of what a great track it is. I saw Bob Dylan play in 2001 at Kilkenny (I really can’t believe it was that long ago). It was one of the best gigs I have ever been to. He really knows how to put a backing band together. Also, with Elvis Costello supporting, it was a pretty stellar line up.

Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On?

I was just in the mood for some Marvin today. It really doesn’t get much better than this, the richness of the track and what must be one of the greatest vocal performances in history (hyperbole warning! – it’s certainly one of my favourites).

Hailu Mergia and the Walias* – Tizita | (NAT)

My world music kick continues. This time the band hails from Ethiopia, although it seems that Hailu Mergia is now a taxi driver in Washington D.C.

I really like the languid feel here. I am not often drawn to instrumental tracks but really enjoyed this and it has a great video to match.
