Lafayette Afro Rock Band* – Hihache

I stumbled across this while meandering around YouTube  Sometimes it is scary how well Google seems to know me and my taste in music.

This is a perfect slice on Funk that I have been enjoying throughout a very relaxed Sunday. Some strong horn action which is always a good thing. It reminds me a little of the wonderful Parliament Funakadelic who I saw this time last year. I can’t believe how fast 12 months have slipped by!

Rick James* – Mary Jane

Rick James? What a beast! I was going to post this on a Friday but then I realised that I wasn’t guilty about it at all. Simply put, it is FLY. The video here is also suitably manic.

The only issue is that Dave Chapelle has meant that I haven’t been able to think about Rick James in the same way.

Mott the Hoople* – All the young dudes

This is classic 1970’s. I can think of few tracks that capture what I think to be the sound of that decade (maybe Disco apart) any better than this. Glam rock’s finest hour?

It was written by David Bowie, on reflection I am surprised he didn’t just record it himself too.

All the young dudes carry the news…

Bobby Womack – Nobody wants you when you’re down and out

This is one of my very favourite Bobby Womack tunes, from the 1973 album Facts of life. His voice is so true here (as ever), laying bare experiences that were taken from his own troubled life during this period.

Bobby has recently launched a comeback releasing the Damon Albarn produced album The Bravest Man in the Universe from which I posted Please forgive my heart earlier in the year.

Neil Young – Heart of gold

Some nice, mellow Monday listening to ease you into your week.

Neil Young has been on my mind for a couple of reasons recently. He has a new album which is due to be released this week. Frankly, I have been too scared to check it out. Amazon keep emailing me about it regardless though! Secondly, The Guardian ran a list of the worst album sleeves of all time and (rather harshly in my opinion) Zuma (which features the amazing Cortez the killer) was in there.

The Staple Singers – Let’s do it again

This is a classic, languid soul number from Stax legends The Staple Singers. It’s perfect Sunday listening, ideal for relaxing while gathering ones self for the week ahead.

The Jackson Five* – I want you back

As I mentioned I was in Oxford today for a wedding in beautiful Hertford College. It’s certainly nicer that Hertford, Hertfordshire which I had the dubious pleasure of spending a significant amount time travelling through in a past life.

I wanted to post a positive “wedding” kind of track. It doesn’t get more feel good than this! I don’t normally go for live versions but I couldn’t resist this. How young does Michael Jackson look!?

Earth, Wind and Fire* – That’s the way of the world (GPF)

Classic smooth 70’s track from Disco titans Earth, Wind and Fire.

I hope you have a great weekend, I am off to Oxford this evening for a wedding tomorrow. Should be a fun night.

Hearts of fire creates love desire. Take you higher and higher…

Hall and Oates – Sara Smile (GPF)

I’m not sure that really feel all that guilty about this. It is nice and chilled out. My Friday choices seem to oscillate between riotous and mellow depending on the weekend ahead and preceding week. Given how busy the past few days have been I am certainly leaning towards the latter today.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Bob Marley* – I shot the sheriff

I just realised that I hadn’t gotten around to posting Bob Marley yet! Not sure how that managed to happen.

I had a great few days in London, lot’s of carousing, (not) sleeping on couches and visits to my favourite haunts. It’s going to take me a few days to recover…
