Four Tet* – Angel Echoes

Four Tet is a London DJ. As usual this is something mellow for Sunday. It has a unique sound, I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there is something compelling about it.

MNDR* – I go away (NAT)

I have noted that the blog has been a bit light on Electronica music of late. Fortunately, I stumbled across this on youtube a few days ago. The chorus is insistent, infectious and been stuck in my head since. I don’t know much about MNDR other than they are a New York male/female duo.

I’ll go away, I’ll go away, I’ll go my own way…

Moby* – In my heart

I was looking for something mellow to ease me into the working week this morning and Moby did the trick. It surprised me a little that he hadn’t already featured on the blog.

This is taken from Play which was a favourite from my school days and is still a favourite album cover. It, along with Air’s Moon Safari came along about the same and opened my naive eyes to Electonic music. While Moby has perhaps strayed towards the status of celebrity with too much to say from himself (is it just me or are vegan’s a little unsettling?), Play is still a great album.

A fact about Moby – apparently he got his name because he is a descendent of Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick.

Cherokee* – Take care of you

Just back from a cultural evening hearing Alain de Botton speak about his new book Religion for atheists. The talk was stimulating without being over intelluectualised, a very unusual (for me anyway) and enjoyable Monday night.

Cherokee soothed me through the usual jarring beginning to the week that is Monday morning. It has been said that there is a lack of chilled out electronica featured in the blog. That is mostly because I find a lot of it to be a little bland for my taste. But there is the rare occasion (like the song highlighted by my father) that moves me. It is usually a case of the right song at the correct time. Monday morning is usually that time, and this is no exception.

Moodymann* – The thief that stole my sad days…Ya blessin’ me (NAT)

Moodymann is a DJ from Detroit, Michigan who makes thoroughly interesting music. It mashes up genres and styles to pleasing effect. It is mostly quite mellow and good to listen to while relaxing.

I like this tune particularly for the choice samples it contains. It reminds me a little in that regard of a Fatboy Slim song I used to love.

Air – All I need

This is perfect, mellow Sunday night listening. It is taken from the spectacular Moon Safari album by French chill out pioneers Air. Apologies for the slightly strange video, it was the best I could find.

Octo Octa* – Memories (NAT)

I don’t much about this guy(s), or in fact anything at all really other than I like this track very much. It is hypnotic and urgent. I heard it on Tom Ravenscroft’s 6music show a couple of weeks ago and the loop has stuck been in my brain ever since.

The Knife* – Heartbeats

I heard this song over and over when I was at university and came to really like it. It has a slightly quirky sound that grew on me.

The Knife are a Swedish band and came into my mind tangentially after I went to see The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo last week. I enjoyed the movie but was a little taken aback at it’s jarring darkness. I had never read the books or seen the Swedish language version so was totally unprepared. Story of my life. The scenery kind of made me want to take a train to northern Sweden though.

Grouper – Alien Observer

I was introduced to this lady by my buddy Matty, who guest posted about her a few months ago. She makes music that is a little quieter than the normal type which moves me but there is something about it that grabbed me. We subsequently went to see her at St.Giles in the field, a church in Soho. She was very enjoyable (the supports acts? Not so much) and the setting was perfect.

This track is taken off her latest album, AIA, and is gentle and hypnotic. It has been soothing me this week as I deal with the jarring effects of being back to work after a blissful week at home.

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Round and Round

This was one of my favourite tunes of last year. I first listened to it because of the intriguing band name but there is something more to it than that. It has a really pleasing retro sound, like a dreamy forgotten favourite from the 70’s.

The utterly random video here is also pretty enjoyable. John Travolta? Check. Aerobics? Check. Naturally. Hipster enough for you? It strangely works well with the song though.
