Francis Bebey* – New Track (NAT)

There has been a bit of a world music drought on the blog of late, so I thought I would feature this today. Like all the world music I love it is simple and joyful. Really, you can’t ask much more from a song.
Francis Bebey was a real renaissance man. Born in Cameroon, he was a writer and sculptor as well as make great music like this. This track is taken from a compilation of his I have been listening and enjoying recently.
So I am readying myself for a weekend in Barcelona on a friend’s stag do. Does anyone have any tips, for sightseeing or just plain survival?

Jai Paul – Jasmine (Demo)

This guy finally has some new material (that I can find on youtube)! It has been a long wait since he put out my favourite track of 2011 at the end of 2010. I really like this, just like BTSTU it is quiet and smooth. There is something both retro and contemporary about it which makes it great.

It sounds like it should be on the soundtrack to the movie Drive. I can definitely imagine The Driver cruising around full of quiet, brooding intensity and listening to this as it slowly builds and builds.

Sébastien Tellier* – La Ritournelle

It sure doesn’t feel like the 1st day of May in London! I was greeted to a deluge of near biblical proportions this morning as I stepped out the door to work. Jackpot.
Giles Peterson’s played this on his 6music show on Saturday. He was interviewing legendary Nigerian afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, who features on the track.
It was a blast from the past as I listened to it a lot at university but had largely forgotten it. It is strange how only Europeans can get away with singing lyrics that are somewhat banal yet make them sound mystical!
Sébastien Tellier seems like an interesting cat. He went from producing this, which I happen to think is pretty great, to representing France in (the kitsch-fest known as) The Eurovision. This makes it a little tough for me to take him seriously. A little like Stevie Wonder syndrome, should sins in his later career diminish an earlier, great song? He does get plus points for his prodigious beard though.

Nneka* – Shining Star (Joe Goddard Remix)

I heard this on a playlist Pete Tong put together for 6music. It was full of varied and surprising tunes, most of which I really liked. This remix has a quiet energy and an uplifting feel, just the ticket for a gray Tuesday in North London.
Nneka is a German singer of African descent which makes her a little like Joy Denalane in background and style. Both are worth a listen.

Max Cooper* – Raw (Marc Romboy’s Sub Attack Remix) (NAT)

This is most definitely not the kind of thing that normally speaks to me. However, I have been unable to get enough of it over recent days. There is something compelling about it’s nagging, insistent sound.
If his Wikipedia page is to be believed Max Cooper is from Belfast and completed a PhD in computational biology before focusing on music full time. It makes me wonder where it all went wrong for me?

Vondelpark – HipBone

London band Vondelpark were favourites from last year that I have finally gotten round to revisiting. I was in the mood for something quiet and this was just the tonic. It is hypnotic and has a washed out sound that seems to be en vogue at the moment.

And you’ve got it going for you…

Jacques Greene* – Another Girl (NAT)

This guy was another who I found reading reviews of this year’s of SXSW festival in Texas. I don’t know too much about him other than he is super fresh and from the musical hotbed that is Montreal.

The track reminds me a little of BTSTU in that it is arresting, electronic and more than a little hypnotic. I hope he come up with a little more to back it up than Jai Paul though. What ever happened to that guy? I clearly gave him the kiss of death!

Kindness* – House

I am still feeling rather fragile after my weekend’s endeavours so this rather mellow number is welcome today. It builds towards a positive, uplifting end which reminds me a little of Passion Pit or Phoenix, both of which I need to revisit in the near future.

I can’t give you all that you need but I’ll give you all I can feel…

Another’s Blood – Foreign Nights (Jewellers Remix) (NAT)

My normally photographic memory for where I first heard a song has failed me in this instance. I found a note I had made myself to revisit it earlier this week and was glad I did. Where and when I made that note, who knows?

I know virtually nothing about these guys apart from the fact this is spellbinding. It has an otherworldly sound with a pretty interesting video here to match.
