Miike Snow* – Devil’s Work

As the half-year approaches I have been reading a few “Best of 2012 so far” lists (as well as trying to compile my own). These guys showed up on a couple of lists and I quite enjoyed this track.
They are a Swedish band, and not in fact a singer that was born Michael Snow. Those crazy Swedes! The track has a classic Euro-electro sound that has been quite prominent of late (see M83, Air France, Delorean etc..).
I’m out for dinner for a friend’s birthday this evening. We are going to a restaurant that only serves Chicken and Steak. Think I might give the meat cocktail a miss though. I will report back tomorrow.

Rudimental* – Spoons (NAT)

Hackney band Rudimental were new to me this week, but it seems that I was rather late on them as they are currently number one in the UK pop charts. I guess that is a testament to how irrelevant charts have become to me. Perhaps they should change it to reflect the most watched videos on Youtube.
I was out for dinner tonight in one of my favourite curry houses in London, Tayybs in Whitechapel. Check it out if you are ever in that neck of the woods, it is worth the queue.

Chet Faker* – Terms and conditions (NAT)

Melbourne artist Chet Faker is a bit of a mystery, hidden behind a puntastic pseudonym and a prodigious beard (kudos to him on that).
He released an interesting and very different sounding cover/reimagination of the 90’s classic No Diggity earlier in the year, which brought him to my attention. However, even though I enjoyed it, it felt a little gimmicky to me. This is much more my speed. It is languid and brooding and has been the perfect soundtrack for a granite grey day in north London spent watch rain relentlessly fall from a slate coloured sky.

Washed Out – You and I

This guy was a favourites from last year. Their name is fitting of their mellow, almost haunting sound (apparently it’s know as chillwave). This track is taken from the 2011 album Within and Without and features Caroline Polachek of the band Chairlift.

2nd June 2012

These guys used to go by the name Hype Williams. Which is a good name for a smashmouth MC, not so sure about this. It is dark and a little unsettling but there is also something beautiful lurking beneath the surface if you look hard enough. It is taken from the album Black is beautiful, which is pretty darn fresh.

I am back in Ireland for the weekend, it is nice to be home and to escape the madness of Jubilee weekend London. I had forgotten what open space feels like.

Gerry Read* – 90’s Prostitution Racket (NAT)

Not sure what the title of this track is about, or the wrestling video here. However, I have been really enjoying it all week. It is a dark, washed out reimagining of an 80’s Cathy Dennis tune. Again it has the the winning combination of being both fresh and retro.

I know next to nothing about the artist (can anyone enlighten me?). I found virtually nothing about him online beyond the fact that he is young and from the UK.

Daft Punk – One More Time

My mind has been on California this week. I have had some correspondence from a few of my old homies and especially today, as the weather in London has a distinctly more Californian air that of late.

Daft Punk and Berkeley are inextricably linked in my mind. They were a huge part of the soundtrack to my year there, and I memorably saw them play live just before I left. One of the best shows I have ever been to.

This is a perfectly upbeat summer tune. I hope whereever you are listening to this you are in a summery mood. There is also a typically off beat and enjoyable video here.

CFCF* – Big Love

A mid-week energy boost. This is a track that I first heard in Austin when I was there for SXSW festival a couple of years ago. It has a real upbeat, feelgood sound.

When saints go machine* – Kelly

This is so infectious. It has been crawling over my brain all weekend, in a good way.
When The Saints go machine are a fairly new Danish band. Somehow when I found out they were Scandinavian I wasn’t surprised. They have a slightly esoteric, synth-heavy sound that seems to be typical of a lot of music from there I have heard recently. Something about them reminds me of Icelandic band FM Belfast who I posted last year.

Run DMT* – Spruce Bringsteen (NAT)

A decidedly pun-heavy post today.

Austin band Run DMT seem to make very varied music. From heavy electronica to this, washed out sound. The track reminds me a little of 2011 favourites Real Estate who I posted again earlier in the year. A really fitting video here too.
