The xx* – Angels

This is the new offering from London indie-heads The xx. I previously haven’t been quite as sold on these guys as some critics I’ve read, but I like this. A lot.

I thought it would be a good idea to post something a little more current after recieving some feedback that I had posted a few older “naff” tunes recently. Thanks for that Davy…

Luke Million* – Arnold

I’m not really sure what to say about this! This is strange and a more than a little kitschy but at the same time very infectious. Despite being released fairly recently it has a timeless catchy, disco sound with a bizarre video to match.
Luke Million is an Australian DJ (I seem to have posted a lot of Antipodeans recently) who is part of a disco collective called The Swiss.
I have been enjoying a relaxing couple of days at my parent’s house. It’s been nice to take it easy before really getting into gear for my move to Dublin. Still lots to do but I’m not thinking about that just at the moment!
Down, up, down, up, down. Come on, more energy…

Alexander Holland* – The Best of Me (NAT)

This is just so upbeat and full of energy it I find it irresistibleI love how it melds together a modern house sound with a classic disco flavour. It also matches my mood as I prepare to leave London tomorrow. I’ve moved beyond feeling sad to be leaving to being excited for the new challenge that awaits me in Dublin.
Alexander Holland is a DJ hailing from (to quote Resident Advisor) “the great city of Adelaide, Australia, with it’s meager but passionate wine loving population of 1 million.”
Best of me? I’m gonna get the best of you…

KiNK featuring Rachel Row* – Hand made

After a few retro tunes in a row I thought I should take things in a different direction. Some Bulgarian deep house? That will do it! I love this track’s energetic, summery sound especially when it shifts into another gear (~ 4mins in) halfway through.

There is also a cool video here about how it was made which give a good insight about how a DJ mixes a song together and house music in general. Something to aspire to…

I am in the midst of a busy week. Packing is never fun. I have been surprised at the emotional toll it has been taking on me. Fitting four years of your life into a suitcase is tough!

The Blue Nile – Tinseltown in the rain

Posting Orange Juice earlier in the week made me think of this, from my favourite Glasgow band and in fact one of my favourites of all time, The Blue Nile. It has an utterly classic 80’s sound and is perfect mellow Sunday night listening.

Vatican Shadow* – Bin Laden’s corpse

The first thing that struck me about this song was it’s name – Bin Laden’s corpse (taken from the album Washington Buries Al Qaeda Leader At Sea) might be the strangest title (and album name) I have encountered. Despite this, the more I listened to it the more I enjoyed it.

It’s sparse and hypnotic and soothed me through Monday morning. I don’t know too much about this artist beyond: “Minimal synth industrial project of Dominick Fernow concerning the Muslim Middle East and America’s involvement therein.” from Last FM.

M83 – Intro (featuring Zola Jesus)

This is the first track of the spectacular 2011 album Hurry up, We’re dreaming. I already posted Midnight City, the second track, which was number 3 in my top 30 of 2011. Both are urgent and coruscating and I can’t get enough of them and the whole album.

T.E.E.D.* – Garden (Calibre Remix) (Dom Ayliffe guest post)

I liked this track the moment I first heard it and it’s subsequently become one of the most listened to tracks on my iTunes collection.

I’m a big fan of drum n bass, and I must credit London Elektricity’s Hospital Record Podcasts for introducing me to this gem. I think it’s a perfect example of how many diverse emotions can be evoked by music from this genre.

Those haunting chords, the hopeful vocals and the undulating bassline all woven together with a clinical drum beat. Put this on some speakers with decent bass and enjoy my Sunday chill out song.

Peter, Bjorn and John* – Let’s call it off (Girl Talk remix)

I stumbled across this today on Youtube and it’s relentless energy is a perfect reflection of both my week and feelings today as London was bathed in sunshine.

Look out for a guest post from resident dancehead Dom tomorrow. I’ll check back in on Monday, also look out for my best of 2012 so far list. I am just applying the finishing touches.

Grimes* – Genesis (NAT)

Montreal artist Grimes is another whom I have heard much about so far in 2012, and she has featured prominently in the “Best of so far…” lists I have been reading recently as the half-year approaches.

She kind of reminds me of other one-woman troubadours tUnE-yArDs and Grouper who were favourites from last year. I really like this track too, there is something in the synth that is delightfully 80’s.
