I was reading this Guardian article about the Triple J Hot 100 of the last 20 years and it reminded me of this quiet gem.
It is taken from Ben Folds Five’s classic 1997 album Whatever and Ever Amen.

A classic slice of upbeat 90’s Britpop from The Boo Radleys. This takes me back! Every time I hear it I can’t help but smile.

A colleague was talking about Cuban Collective Buena Vista Social Club and going to see them at the Cork Midsummer Festival in July.
It reminded me of finding them in my Dad’s record collection when I was at school and finding their sound both fascinating and hypnotic. Little has changed listening to them now probably 15 years later.

Van Morrison is a masterful live performer. This is taken from his 1994 live album A night in San Francisco and might be my favourite live track (although it’s a toss up with Rave on John Donne).
Van in his heyday:
A bit of a throwback 90’s classic (1996 for those keeping score at home) from one hit wonder Mark Morrison. The eagle eared amougnst you may spot the 80’s classic from Tom Tom Club being sampled here.

This track is taken from Neil Youngs 1992 classic Harvest Moon. It’s mellow, wistful and rather beautiful. It has been a welcome calming influence on me recently.
Neil Young – Harvest Moon:
I have to confess that for a very long time I never really “got” Radiohead. There relentlessly bleak music just wasn’t what I was about. Probably the fact that they were on the 437th artist that I posted probably illustrates this rather neatly.
However, recently I have increasingly been enjoying their music. For the first time (potentially ever) I found myself listened to them by choice. I am unsure if this is a good thing or a bad thing!

This was inexplicably and immovably on my mind all of last weekend. It’s funny how that happens sometimes. It actually doesn’t sound that bad, the smoothness somewhat makes up for the cheesiness. I can’t believe it was released in 1991!
