Björk – Play Dead

I am an unashamedly massive Björk fan. She is my favourite non-Motown female vocalist. Beyond that she seems like the kind of person I would like to have a beer with. While that’s not a particularly important quality for me when I think about music, it’s a plus. I imagine that it certainly wouldn’t be a boring evening!
This gem is taken off her first album Debut, which I can’t believe is nearly 20 years old (I am sure I still have the cassette which I stole off my Dad somewhere)! It is typical of her work in that it has a soaring urgency that I find utterly compelling.

Elliot Smith – Son of Sam

Elliot Smith has featured heavily in the soundtrack to my week. As you might imagine, this is not a very positive indicator about my mood. I’m not sure why but I seem to have been in something of a funk for the past few days. The initial boost of enthusiasm brought on by a change of scenery must have worn off. I am sure I will snap out of it before too long.

This track is taken off the very enjoyable if somewhat morose Figure 8, which was the last album Elliot Smith completed before his death. On a brighter note, it is one of my favourite album sleeves being simple but  quite effective.
