The Shins – Caring is creepy
Short post after a long day. Something soothing to send me towards slumber on a rainy Monday night. Was reminded of this when watching Garden State recently.
The Shins – Caring is creepy

Mayer Hawthorne – Make her mine
This is has an old fashioned soul sound, which is never bad. I saw the dapper Mayer Hawthorne and his touring band, The County (pretty good name) in London in 2010 and it was one of the best gigs I went to all year. It was so fun, just like an old fashioned soul review.
Roisin Murphy – Through time
Roisin Murphy is the former lead singer of late 90’s and early 2000’s electro-pop darlings Moloko. She is slightly eccentric and richly talented, perhaps a little like an Irish Bjork. This is taken from her 2005 debut solo album Ruby Blue which was a massive favourite in my university days and used to get heavy play on my old radio show.
Endlessly formulating foolish, romantic ideals of love…
Atmosphere – Say Shhh
This is languid. Cool and laid back, it always makes me feel relaxed when I hear it. It is full of wit and self depreciating humour (a rarity in rap) including also has one of my favourite lines in all of hip hop (see below).
But, I couldn’t figure out much to brag about. Um, Prince lives here, we got 10,000 lakes…
Robert Owens – One Body (Kaine Interpretation)
This is a MASSIVE house tune.
Somebody, one body…
The Field – Then it’s white
This is a little meandering but it is very soothing and hypnotic. Is it just me or is no surprise, based on this track, that The Field is Swedish? It is taken from the album Looping state of mind, which I happen to think is a great title.
Sade – Your love is king
I can’t decide whether this is awesome or interminably, mortifyingly naff. I heard it a few weeks ago and it has been periodically but unshakably been playing on repeat in my mind. It does have a smooth charm which is somewhat irresistible, and Sade can really sing.
Real Estate – It’s Real
This is light and jaunty, and I have been enjoying it recently. It reminds me of the beach boys and perhaps a more sunny fleet foxes. I don’t know too much about them other then they are from New Jersey via Brooklyn.
Ryan Adams – New York, New York
This seemed like the right song to post today. I still remember this day 10 years ago very vividly. I watched the television dumbfounded, unable to comprehend, as one of the most startling events I had ever experienced unfolded on the screen.
Dead Prez vs. Grizzly Bear – Two weeks of hip hop
This just works, it probably shouldn’t, but it just does. A real meeting of two starkly different genres but I like it. Grizzly Bear are NYC hipsters and Dead Prez are angry, conscious rappers with something interesting to say. It’s great when a mash up enhances rather than detract from 2 good songs, which is my normal experience of them.
You would rather have a Lexus or justice? A dream or some substance? A Beamer, a necklace or FREEDOM?
