Todd Terje* – Inspector Norse (Helen Chandler guest post)

This is my favourite song at the moment. I’ve been listening to it intensely for about a month now, and when I say ‘intensely’, I mean at least twice a day.

I moved to London 3 weeks ago. It’s been exciting and frustrating and tiring and challenging. On the tube in the mornings, when my hair is stuck to my face with sweat and I’m trying to avoid eye contact with the person I’m almost nose to nose with, Inspector Norse’s tireless disco-esque beat still makes me smile. Properly smile. Like a crazy person on the tube.

The video is brilliant too. I love dancing, completely, so I look at the guy in the video (Inspector Norse himself) and I think ‘Yes, man. I know what you mean.’

Solange* – Losing you

l

I am aware that this isn’t the type of thing that usually grabs my attention. It is a little too poppy for my pretentious sensibilities. I am probably also a bit late to the party.

What caught my eye was the video, which is quite kitschy but also sort of great at the same time. I was also struck by how it was like an very polished, stylised version of the Sorie Kondie video I posted last week, even down to the somewhat stiff dance they both perform. I must confess that the song has grown on me too.

Solange is Beyoncé’s kid sister and if genes are anything to go by I imagine she will be ubiquitious before too long (if this hasn’t happened already).

The Jackson Five* – I want you back

As I mentioned I was in Oxford today for a wedding in beautiful Hertford College. It’s certainly nicer that Hertford, Hertfordshire which I had the dubious pleasure of spending a significant amount time travelling through in a past life.

I wanted to post a positive “wedding” kind of track. It doesn’t get more feel good than this! I don’t normally go for live versions but I couldn’t resist this. How young does Michael Jackson look!?

Sorie Kondi* – Without Money, No Family (NAT)

I had the pleasure of hearing blind Sierra Leone singer Sorie Kondi being interviewed by Lamin Fofana on WFMU last week. Creole must be one of the most lyrical languages I’ve ever heard spoken.

He played this track during the interview and I enjoyed just about as much as anything I have heard thus far in 2012. It is so pure that it filled me with joy when I heard it. Additionally, the video contains some amazing scenes.

I seem to have been going through  a real World Music phase in recent weeks. There is just something so refreshing about it.

Robbie Robertson* – Somewhere down the crazy river

While this is not fresh in the sense of being released recently or by an unknown artist, it is fresh in the sense I heard it for the first time today.

This is taken from Canadian icon Robbie Robertson (good name) of The Band fame’s eponymous debut solo album which was released in 1987 and it has a classic 80’s sound. Not to mention some classic 80’s style on display in the video! Hello mullet…

Dr.Hook* – When you’re in love with a beautiful woman (GPF)

Another classic to round off the week. What a great video! Could it be more 70’s?

This is just so silky smooth, I particularly like the backing vocals. I can’t help but smile whenever I hear it.

Can’t believe it’s September tomorrow…

Color me Badd* – I wanna sex you up (GPF)

I know this is naff, but the vocals. The vocals. There is something about the harmony that is irresistible. Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers for the 90’s? Just a somewhat different subject matter!

Also, how 90’s is the video? LOVE it…

Have a great weekend!

Frankie goes to Hollywood* – Relax (don’t do it) | (GPF)

I heard this played during the opening ceremony of the Olympics and it reminded my (guiltily) about how much I enjoyed it. I think it is the relentless bass that does it for me. Pretty classic 80’s video here too. White gloves!!

Fatboy Slim – Praise You

Apologies for another delayed post. This new job (and the lack of internet at home) is really starting to eat into my time to research and post!
Another classic tune from my formative years. A great video too, a flash mob before they were a thing.

Darwin Deez – DNA

Because my situation is in a state of flux I have struggled to do as much research as normal this week. I.e. I haven’t been able to obsessively listen to as many radio shows and podcasts as normal. Unfortunately this trend will probably continue for a few more days as I am scheduled to move to Dublin full time tomorrow.

As a result I have been revisiting some old favourites. Darwin Deez are a band I stumbled across a couple of years ago, and was spellbound by the wonderful Radar Detector, which was the 5th song I posted in my blogging odyssey last January.

These guys are unashamed hipsters and depending on your views on that particular species you may or may not enjoy this video (and the one for Radar Detector). Personally, I really like it’s simple charm.
