CFCF* – Big Love

A mid-week energy boost. This is a track that I first heard in Austin when I was there for SXSW festival a couple of years ago. It has a real upbeat, feelgood sound.

Jacques Greene* – Another Girl (NAT)

This guy was another who I found reading reviews of this year’s of SXSW festival in Texas. I don’t know too much about him other than he is super fresh and from the musical hotbed that is Montreal.

The track reminds me a little of BTSTU in that it is arresting, electronic and more than a little hypnotic. I hope he come up with a little more to back it up than Jai Paul though. What ever happened to that guy? I clearly gave him the kiss of death!

Japandroids – Younger Us

As promised on Thursday I have slowly begun to sift through reviews of the SXSW festival in Austin to find some gems for you. Look out for some in the coming days.

These guys were favourites from last year and I read a glowing review of one of their festival shows. They are slightly noisier and more angular than the music that normally moves me but I find the youthful energy and vigour here just irresistible.

Also, Japandroids might be my favourite band name ever…

Horse Feathers – Curs in the weeds

I stumbled across these guys at SXSW festival last year. I was surprised that I like them as they are far from the typical band that usually moves me. However, there is something about this song that speaks to me. It is honest and refreshing un-modern. I usually spend my time chasing things that sound fresh, funky and/or cutting edge so it is nice once in a while to have a change in pace.

Oddisee – Hip hop’s cool again

Oddisee (not to be confused with Odyssey) is a hip hip producer from Washington DC. I first came across him in Austin, TX at the South by southwest festival when I was there last year.

I had been thinking about posting this track for a while but then fate pointed me at it tonight as Oddisee is a guest on my favourite radio show (and big source of music for me). I can’t fight that. I love the sample, simple and catchy.

Grand Hallway – Raindrops

This feels apt today as I got rather damp on my way home from work this evening.

These guys were on a “best of SXSW” compilation that I picked up whilst in Austin for the festival. I don’t know much about them apart from that they are from Seattle – I think it rains there too sometimes.
