I was reminded of this track over the weekend and I was surprised to find that I hadn’t already featured it, having focusing my previous Bobby Womack post on his excellent 2012 album The Bravest Man in the Universe.

This track, from North Carolina native Lee Fields, has been running about my mind for the past couple of weeks. Given that it is taken from Faithful Man, which was released last year, I really enjoyed it’s classic soul sound. It could easily have been recorded in Hitsville USA in it’s pomp.
Lee Fields:
I heard this track a few days ago and was reminded of what a great song it is. I was also surprised that I hadn’t posted it already.
The Temptations are Motown royalty, coming from The Motor City itself and this is just one of several iconic tracks they recorded.
The Temptations:
One of the great pleasures of writing this blog over the past few years has been people sharing with me the music that they love and that inspires them.
This was one such track, which a good friend and regular musical co-conspirator sent me last week. It is right in my wheelhouse (soul, my first love) and given that I hadn’t heard it before it was a double pleasure.
It is taken from Florida singer (and general bad ass) Charles Bradley’s recently critically acclaimed 2013 album Victim of Love.

I stumbled across this track from Detroit singer Dee Edwards over the weekend and it’s silky smoothness has been on my mind since. It has also been way too long since I posted some soul.

I was just in the mood for some Marvin today. It really doesn’t get much better than this, the richness of the track and what must be one of the greatest vocal performances in history (hyperbole warning! – it’s certainly one of my favourites).
Marvin Gaye:
I had the unexpected pleasure last night of stumbling across a Rocky marathon at The Grand Social last night. Watching Rocky IV I had forgotten how awesome and ridiculously over the top (gloriously so) this track was.
James Brown was such a hero!! Seeing him perform a few years ago was a dream come true.
James Brown:
Classic Soul track from Barbara Acklin. It was released on Brunswick Records, home of such other greats as Jackie Wilson and The Chi-Lites.

I was in an Al Green mood today and I realised, much to my surprise, that I hadn’t posted this classic track yet. Big oversight on my part.
Al Green:
Some classic soul to finish up the week. I don’t know too much about these guys having discovered them via Mr. Fine Wine but the track is killer.
