The Steelers – Get it from the bottom

This is again going some way to redressing the relative lack of soul music I have posted recently. It is classic Chicago soul, and everything I want from this type of record – pure, both in melody and theme, funky and energetic.

Al Green – Tired of being alone

I have been thinking I need to put some more soul music up here. Had a long chat about all things soul on Saturday night and it made me realise I had been neglecting the genre of late.

The Reverend Al Green is a beast! He has led an interesting life and still found time to make some amazing music. This is silky smooth and a big favourite of mine.

Many moons ago when I was in Memphis (dream come true) I visited the church where Al Green is pastor (yes, that is a moustache).

Minnie Ripperton – Inside my love

This is silky smooth and sultry. It is just what I need to soothe me this evening as I try to regain some equilibrium after the weekend’s excesses.

Irma Thomas – Breakaway

This one is for my buddy Rory. I finally got round to checking out the “Soul Queen of New Orleans” Irma Thomas on his recommendation.

This has all the ingredients of a great soul record. It is two and a half minutes of energetic, pure and funky perfection. It makes me want to MOVE. What more could I ask for?

The Ebonys – Do you like the way I love you?

It has been a while since I posted some classic soul and this is CLASSIC Philly soul. Enjoy.

Penny and The Quarters – You and me

I came across this track when watching Blue Valentine recently. (Is it just me or does Ryan Gosling seem to be pretty much ubiquitous these days?) This song features prominently in the movie, which was very enjoyable if a little sombre. However, this track stole the show for me, I couldn’t get it out of my head for days afterwards, it’s just so darn catchy.

Bill Withers – Use Me

It feels like too longs since I posted some classic soul and this popped into my head today. It is smooth as silk. Enjoy

Mayer Hawthorne – Make her mine

This is has an old fashioned soul sound, which is never bad. I saw the dapper Mayer Hawthorne and his touring band, The County (pretty good name) in London in 2010 and it was one of the best gigs I went to all year. It was so fun, just like an old fashioned soul review.

Sade – Your love is king

I can’t decide whether this is awesome or interminably, mortifyingly naff.  I heard it a few weeks ago and it has been periodically but unshakably been playing on repeat in my mind. It does have a smooth charm which is somewhat irresistible, and Sade can really sing.

Fitz and The Tantrums – MoneyGrabber

I heard these guys on the radio today, and liked their sound. It is like a modern take on Stax and Motown, which is a good place to start. Additionally, I think the Fitz and The Tantrums is a great name.
