DJ/rupture* – Minesweeper Suite track 1

I thought it fitting that DJ/rupture is artist number 500 on my journey. He (and his show Mudd Up!) has been one of my main finds over the past couple of years. It has opened my ears to so many great artists and new genres. It is a mash up of Gemini Dub by J Boogie and Mahmoud Fadl by Jibal Al Nuba and it taken off his Minesweeper Suite mixtape, which was released in 2002.
Sorry this post is delayed, I tried to do it on my new smartphone last night (check me out) but my ineptitude eventually overcame me!

The Drum* – /SYS

I first heard about Chicago based duo The Drum when Lamin Fofana (a DJ who’s radio show on WFMU I very much enjoy) tweeted about them. I love this track’s sound. It sounds like it’s from another planet, in a really good way.

I have a fun day of house hunting in Dublin ahead of me tomorrow. Hopefully by the time tomorrow’s post is written I will have found somewhere to live. Perhaps I will be in the mood for something cheesy to celebrate!

In other news, I saw The Dark Knight rises tonight. It has been a while since I have gotten excited about a seeing movie and it certainly lived up to my expectations. I have to start wearing more black…

The Versatones* – Bila

And now for something completely different! I heard this wacky and manic doo wop tune on Downtown Soulville a few weeks ago and it has been rattling around my brain ever since. It is so upbeat and infectious, a heady combination on a sunny, summers day.

Octo Octa* – Memories (NAT)

I don’t much about this guy(s), or in fact anything at all really other than I like this track very much. It is hypnotic and urgent. I heard it on Tom Ravenscroft’s 6music show a couple of weeks ago and the loop has stuck been in my brain ever since.

Dark City Sisters* – Sekusile (NAT)

I heard these guys on 6music this week. I think they are South African and I have listened to this track endlessly since. It is so uplifiting, pure and joyous. What more could I can ask from a song?

Aside

Los Hijos del Sol – Linda Muñequita

One of the biggest surprises of the year for me has been my growing affection for world music. It has literally come from nowhere.

I know virtually nothing about these guys (they may be from Peru) and even less about what they are singing about (feel free to enlighten me if you are able). However, this has been stuck in my head since I heard it on Tom Ravenscroft’s 6music show last week. The jangly guitar is completely infectious.

Batoma Diallo – Bolo Di Yongo Ma

One of the more interesting thing I have discovered this year, as I meandered through my days of youtune, is an affection for world music that I didn’t know existed. I love the joyous purity of African music.

I was listening to a radio show on WFMU (a NYC radio station which I have previously written about) which plays a very eclectic range of music. On this occasion the DJ was playing some choice West African music which was so fresh, with some music from Mali that was particularly inspired. As it happens I could not find the exact song I wanted on youtube (Jah Youssouf & Bintou Coulibaly – Kahlan) but this one is equally fine.

The Four Brothers – Rumbidzai

I was listening to a radio show where no less than John Peel (what a hero) suggested these guys were the best live act he had ever seen. Wow! High praise indeed, and who am I to argue? They certainly are very pleasing on the ear.

They hail from Zimbabwe and remind me a little of my boys Nguuni Lovers Lovers (still the BEST video of the year), possessing that classic African sound – a little tinny, a lot joyous.

Irresistible.

Vondelpark – TV

This is another sparse, washed out electronica track. I seem to have been listening to an endless stream of these recently. The murmerred, hypnotic lyrics add to the dream-like feel.

I think Vondelpark are from London and are named for a park in Amsterdam.
