Color me Badd* – I wanna sex you up (GPF)

I know this is naff, but the vocals. The vocals. There is something about the harmony that is irresistible. Sam Cooke and The Soul Stirrers for the 90’s? Just a somewhat different subject matter!

Also, how 90’s is the video? LOVE it…

Have a great weekend!

Twin Shadow* – Five Seconds (NAT)

I love this! It’s so energetic and urgent. It also has a wonderful 80’s synth vibe, which is just in my wheelhouse. It makes me want to move.

I have already decided that it’s going to be my weekend anthem.

There is a music video for this song and it’s suitably weird, however it has a 90 second theatrical introduction!

Frankie goes to Hollywood* – Relax (don’t do it) | (GPF)

I heard this played during the opening ceremony of the Olympics and it reminded my (guiltily) about how much I enjoyed it. I think it is the relentless bass that does it for me. Pretty classic 80’s video here too. White gloves!!

Ashanti* – Foolish (GPF)

I can’t believe this is 10 years old! It still sounds as smooth as ever. As I’ve said before I’m just a sucker for music from this era of R’n’B. It takes me back!

The reason I thought of it today is that I was messing about on youtube earlier and came across this DeBarge track which is sampled here.

Oasis – Don’t look back in anger

This song was my early teens. It’s taken from one of the first CD’s I ever owned, the amazing (What’s the story) Morning Glory?

Slip inside the eye of your mind, don’t you know you might find a better place to play…

I got my first night in Dublin over me last night. I don’t quite feel like a resident of the fair city quite yet but I am getting there…

Darwin Deez – DNA

Because my situation is in a state of flux I have struggled to do as much research as normal this week. I.e. I haven’t been able to obsessively listen to as many radio shows and podcasts as normal. Unfortunately this trend will probably continue for a few more days as I am scheduled to move to Dublin full time tomorrow.

As a result I have been revisiting some old favourites. Darwin Deez are a band I stumbled across a couple of years ago, and was spellbound by the wonderful Radar Detector, which was the 5th song I posted in my blogging odyssey last January.

These guys are unashamed hipsters and depending on your views on that particular species you may or may not enjoy this video (and the one for Radar Detector). Personally, I really like it’s simple charm.

Spandau Ballet – Gold (GPF)

Short post at the end of a long day and week.

Had to be this right? A special olympic-themed guilty pleasure Friday. I hope you are enjoying the games as much as I am. Here’s to Team GB bringing home a few more golds.

Passion Pit – Little Secrets

When I need a burst of upbeat positivity (the rain has been relentless since my return to the emerald isle) Massachusetts band Passion Pit are never far from my mind. Their music, and this is a good example, is typically high energy and marked by a slightly off key (if strangely effective) vocal style. Also, it has been far too long since I last posted them.

Higher and higher and higher…

The Drums – How it ended

I like just about everything about this track. The sound is both fresh and energetic yet retro (a great 80’s vibe) and the video is also great, with some strong scenes of London (I’m a particular sucker for that just at the moment).

The Drums are probably of my favourite band of the decade so far. I find it hard to say that with too much conviction as I don’t tend to hold hard and fast views about these kind of things. They are always subject to constant revision. However, given they have released two records I love (this is from last year’s Portamento) and put on by far the best show I have seen in the past couple of years (@The Garage in Islington) I am struggling to think of a credible alternative. Any other suggestions?

Luke Million* – Arnold

I’m not really sure what to say about this! This is strange and a more than a little kitschy but at the same time very infectious. Despite being released fairly recently it has a timeless catchy, disco sound with a bizarre video to match.
Luke Million is an Australian DJ (I seem to have posted a lot of Antipodeans recently) who is part of a disco collective called The Swiss.
I have been enjoying a relaxing couple of days at my parent’s house. It’s been nice to take it easy before really getting into gear for my move to Dublin. Still lots to do but I’m not thinking about that just at the moment!
Down, up, down, up, down. Come on, more energy…
