Modest Mouse* – Float On

iPod song #3. Apologies the music hasn’t been too fresh over the past few days. I promise to attend to some research over the coming days. Hopefully this will bear fruit with some exciting new tracks.

I mentioned earlier in the week that I felt one of the signs of a good song is it’s ability to stay with you after you listen to it. This must be one of the most infectious guitar riffs I know.

Lucky Soul – Struck Dumb

I thought I would get caught up with a couple of tracks that came on my iPod while in transit over the past couple of days that I hadn’t thought about for a while.

Lucky Soul are from London but I first heard them while drunkenly riding in the back of a taxi around Chicago. It’s strange how global music has become. They make great pop tunes, that have a great retro sounds. Apologies for the video here, I couldn’t track down anything better.

Third Eye Blind* – Semi-charmed life (GPF)

Apologies for the interruption to normal blogging service. I am back from Barcelona and just about in one piece. It’s a fun city, if a little sketchy. I did manage to find some time to relax too, which was welcome. I could get used to chilling by the water and enjoying the sunshine!

This is a song that reminds me of school. If the mark of a good song is that it makes you want to hum the tune after hearing it then this qualifies in spades.

Brownstone* – If you love me (GPF)

I heard this a few weeks ago and have been meaning to post it since. It is so darn catchy. I know it’s a bit naff but it is from the mid-90’s sweet spot for which I am an utter sucker!

Brownstone are (was going to write were but then just discovered via their wikipedia page that they have reformed) an all girl group from LA. I have to confess knowing exactly nothing about them beyond this song, but what a song it is!

Have a great weekend.

New Navy* – Zimbabwe (NAT)

This is perhaps a little light but fun nonetheless. Sometimes a jangly guitar riff is enough, particularly on one of the rare days where the sun shines in Dublin and it actually feels summery.

I am not sure though that I would be picking Zimbabwe as my holiday destination of choice just at the moment though…

I don’t know too much about New Navy other than they are Australian. Their radio friendly sound makes me think it won’t be too long before I hear a bit more from them though.

Chairlift* – Planet Health

This track, from hip Brooklyn duo Chairlift is for me a perfect mixture of slightly off-kilter, zany lyrics with a real 80’s flavour (never a bad thing).

It is taken from their 2008 album Does You Inspire You album, which is well worth a listen. I read it described as “dream pop” which, despite being a little naff, sums the sound up quite well I thought.

Real Estate – Out of tune

New Jersey band Real Estate are blog favourites. I discovered them during the course of my research last year and have enjoyed posting them a couple of times since.

They have a great washed out, sunny sound. Maybe it’s just me (and the fact I posted them last week) but something about them reminds me of The Beach Boys. I think it’s the fact that the music is pleasant and summery but there seems to be just a little more depth lurking beneath the surface too.

Dr.Hook* – When you’re in love with a beautiful woman (GPF)

Another classic to round off the week. What a great video! Could it be more 70’s?

This is just so silky smooth, I particularly like the backing vocals. I can’t help but smile whenever I hear it.

Can’t believe it’s September tomorrow…

Dion* – Runaround Sue

Another classic tune, following on from yesterday’s post.

Dion is not who I expected him to be. The fist time I heard this I certainly didn’t picture the singer as an Italian guy from the Bronx! His was an interesting story, in that he managed to become a successful musician despite having been addicted to heroin since his mid-teens.

The Beach Boys – Barbara Ann

I think the past week’s music might be my favourite of 2012 so far. However, as I have mentioned before, like a magpie I am naturally drawn to that which is shiny and new. It was pointed out to me that despite my enthusiasm recent selections have been a little esoteric and that I shouldn’t neglect the classics. Well, it doesn’t get much more classic than The Beach Boys.

If you give me half a chance I will be sure to tell you that The Beach Boys are much more than sunny pop tunes like Surfing’ USA (Pet Sounds takes my breath away). However when it comes to sunny pop tunes I don’t know many better, and Barbra Ann is a perfect example.

Expect a few more old favourites over the coming days…
