LA Vampires and Maria Minerva* – A lover and a friend (NAT)

This is another in a long list of Lo-Fi, washed out songs that I have featured recently. It is a sound that seems to have grabbed me more and more as my blogging journey has progressed. Also a song in English two Thursday’s in a row!

This is from LA Vampires recently release collaboration with Maria Minerva on the well named Not Not Fun records.

Also, I can believe this puts me up to 550 artists! I still remember posting the first (Curtis Mayfield of course) like it was yesterday.

Feist* – Past in present

I haven’t got too much to say about this. It was a favourite from Berkeley and it came into my head this week. I supposed I quite like the theme of the song and certainly agree with it.

So much past inside my present…

Huey Lewis and The News* – The power of love (GPF)

This is just a classic 80’s track. I stumbled across this video on the internet a few weeks ago and it reminded me of this. Nike are so clever. I don’t think Kevin Durant should give up his day job yet though!

I was also struck by the cyclical nature of style. If I was to go out wearing a pair of Nike high tops and a red body warmer I would probably look pretty fly, Marty McFly in fact.

Don’t need money, don’t take fame, don’t need no credit card to ride this train…

Back to the future:

Solange* – Losing you

l

I am aware that this isn’t the type of thing that usually grabs my attention. It is a little too poppy for my pretentious sensibilities. I am probably also a bit late to the party.

What caught my eye was the video, which is quite kitschy but also sort of great at the same time. I was also struck by how it was like an very polished, stylised version of the Sorie Kondie video I posted last week, even down to the somewhat stiff dance they both perform. I must confess that the song has grown on me too.

Solange is Beyoncé’s kid sister and if genes are anything to go by I imagine she will be ubiquitious before too long (if this hasn’t happened already).

The Jackson Five* – I want you back

As I mentioned I was in Oxford today for a wedding in beautiful Hertford College. It’s certainly nicer that Hertford, Hertfordshire which I had the dubious pleasure of spending a significant amount time travelling through in a past life.

I wanted to post a positive “wedding” kind of track. It doesn’t get more feel good than this! I don’t normally go for live versions but I couldn’t resist this. How young does Michael Jackson look!?

Hall and Oates – Sara Smile (GPF)

I’m not sure that really feel all that guilty about this. It is nice and chilled out. My Friday choices seem to oscillate between riotous and mellow depending on the weekend ahead and preceding week. Given how busy the past few days have been I am certainly leaning towards the latter today.

Have a great weekend everyone!

The Police – Every little thing she does is magic

This was my karaoke tune at Bloomsbuy Lanes last night. Fun times. I was worried that I was going to get arrested for crimes against people’s ears. Another point to note is that Come on Eileen by Dexy’s is much more difficult that I imagined!

Every little thing she does is magic!…

The Pretenders* – Don’t get me wrong

Apologies for the delayed posts. I got side tracked by a hectic sojourn to London. Didn’t have time to blog in between socialising, work and catching up with some old buddies.

This is fun and upbeat and put a spring in my step when I heard it while walking past a St.Paul’s Cathedral which was bathed in Autumnal sunshine earlier.

Don’t get me wrong…

The Silver Seas* – The best things in life

I discovered this track through Shazam, a pretty great service that has significantly boosted my capacity to identify tracks in films and bars.

It is sprightly, energetic and rather fun. The Silver Seas are from Nashville, Tennessee which I keep reading about as being a hotbed of live music. I am considering a return trip to Austin in 2013 for SXSW festival and may stop by Nashville too so I can compare.

Robbie Robertson* – Somewhere down the crazy river

While this is not fresh in the sense of being released recently or by an unknown artist, it is fresh in the sense I heard it for the first time today.

This is taken from Canadian icon Robbie Robertson (good name) of The Band fame’s eponymous debut solo album which was released in 1987 and it has a classic 80’s sound. Not to mention some classic 80’s style on display in the video! Hello mullet…
