I came across this on my random travels on YouTube this week and whilst it’s a little cheesy, I rather enjoyed it.
It is taken from Portland, OR band Pink Martini’s 2007 album of the same name.

I had the unexpected pleasure last night of stumbling across a Rocky marathon at The Grand Social last night. Watching Rocky IV I had forgotten how awesome and ridiculously over the top (gloriously so) this track was.
James Brown was such a hero!! Seeing him perform a few years ago was a dream come true.

Even though this is rather pop-centric and John Newman’s vocal style feels a little contrived, this track has been stuck in my head all week. It’s a rather feel-good track to hum along to.

This remix of a 2004 track from American singer Teedra Moses is by Montreal Dj Kaytranda. It is a little cheesy but I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since discovering it earlier in the week on Far From Cyan.

This is a rather fun track from Portland band Glass Candy. This may be somewhat flattering to them but their style and vocalist rather remind me of (my personal jukebox favourites) Blondie.

This is another recent discover who I haven’t been able to stop listening to. This is taken from Fleetwood Mac sound-a-like’s Pure Bathing Culture self titled EP.

CjK Guest Post – Summer Cover #1
Summertime from Gershwin’s Porgy and Best, which has been covered on a number of occasions, might have been the obvious choice for a summer time cover to kick off ‘summer covers’.
Jimmy Somerville’s reedy voice, recorded in 1984, seems to nail this version of It Ain’t Necessarily So from the same musical. The song was controversial in appearing to openly challenge biblical stories. The video could not be farther from the stage version of the show.
Bronski Beat:
This is the new single from up and coming London singer Laura Welsh. I really like it’s stripped back simplicity. The smoothness reminds me a little of Jessie Ware, which is no bad thing.

I have been wanting to re-visit Solange since posting Losing You, which was one of my top tracks (and probably my favourite video) of 2012.
I really like this track’s old school flavour. The intro has all the hallmarks of a Motown classic. It could almost be Diana or Martha jumping in with the vocals. A real feel good classic.
Since hearing this I have been reflecting on how astonishing it is that Beyonce may not even be the most talented member of her own family!

I haven’t gone down the route of some cheesy R’n’B/pop in a while but I haven’t been able to get this track out of my head all week. It’s so catchy I have found myself listening to it over and over despite the fact the my inner musical snob is aghast!
It is taken from Atlanta singer Ciara’s soon to be released eponymously-titled album.
