La Mákina del Karibe* – Radio Gozambike (NAT)

This takes a few seconds to get going, but once it does it really gets going. It is Columbian artist that I heard on Afritanga: The sound of Afro Columbia, I collection I came across recently.
It has an infectious, manic energy that I found really irreisistible and reminds me a little of a Columbian version of Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers who my boy Brian posted for me a few months back.

Chet Faker* – Terms and conditions (NAT)

Melbourne artist Chet Faker is a bit of a mystery, hidden behind a puntastic pseudonym and a prodigious beard (kudos to him on that).
He released an interesting and very different sounding cover/reimagination of the 90’s classic No Diggity earlier in the year, which brought him to my attention. However, even though I enjoyed it, it felt a little gimmicky to me. This is much more my speed. It is languid and brooding and has been the perfect soundtrack for a granite grey day in north London spent watch rain relentlessly fall from a slate coloured sky.

Gerry Read* – 90’s Prostitution Racket (NAT)

Not sure what the title of this track is about, or the wrestling video here. However, I have been really enjoying it all week. It is a dark, washed out reimagining of an 80’s Cathy Dennis tune. Again it has the the winning combination of being both fresh and retro.

I know next to nothing about the artist (can anyone enlighten me?). I found virtually nothing about him online beyond the fact that he is young and from the UK.

Hygher Baby* – Let U Go (NAT)

This is perhaps a little cheesy (maybe it would have been better to post tomorrow). However, I love the smooth sound, it reminds me of all the 90’s R’n’B that I am an utter sucker for. I like things that sound retro and current at the same time, it is a neat trick to pull off.

TV Girl* – Lizzy come back to life (NAT)

This is probably the best new track I have heard in a while. I have been listening to it endlessly this week. TV girl are from San Diego and have a lo-fi, washed out sound that remind me a little of Best Coast, who were favourites from last year. This track is taken from their new EP Benny and the Jetts (nice Elton John reference there, another great track). It makes me want to MOVE…

Very sad news today about Donna Summer, look out for a track by her over the weekend. Does anyone have any particular favourite of hers to recommend?

Run DMT* – Spruce Bringsteen (NAT)

A decidedly pun-heavy post today.

Austin band Run DMT seem to make very varied music. From heavy electronica to this, washed out sound. The track reminds me a little of 2011 favourites Real Estate who I posted again earlier in the year. A really fitting video here too.

Francis Bebey* – New Track (NAT)

There has been a bit of a world music drought on the blog of late, so I thought I would feature this today. Like all the world music I love it is simple and joyful. Really, you can’t ask much more from a song.
Francis Bebey was a real renaissance man. Born in Cameroon, he was a writer and sculptor as well as make great music like this. This track is taken from a compilation of his I have been listening and enjoying recently.
So I am readying myself for a weekend in Barcelona on a friend’s stag do. Does anyone have any tips, for sightseeing or just plain survival?

Me and My Drummer* – Runner (Reprise)

I don’t know much about these guys beyond the fact that they are German and I hadn’t heard them before the past couple weeks.

This is very enjoyable even if it flirts with being overly maudlin. It has a somber power that I find quite striking and the ambiance fitted in well with my downbeat mood caused by the wretched weather in London this week.

Max Cooper* – Raw (Marc Romboy’s Sub Attack Remix) (NAT)

This is most definitely not the kind of thing that normally speaks to me. However, I have been unable to get enough of it over recent days. There is something compelling about it’s nagging, insistent sound.
If his Wikipedia page is to be believed Max Cooper is from Belfast and completed a PhD in computational biology before focusing on music full time. It makes me wonder where it all went wrong for me?
