Dean Blunt – Papi

A nice quiet and perhaps slightly dark track here from Dean Blunt, who I know next to nothing about, other that he (along with Inga Copeland) used to go by the name Hype Williams.

I really like his voice, it is rather distinctive. The only other singer who I can think of who is like it is Stuart A. Staples of Tindersticks.

Above & Beyond* – Walter White | (Dom Ayliffe guest post)

Above and Beyond of Anjunabeats have created a delightful anthem in homage to their favourite Breaking Bad character, Walter White.
As you listen, the progressive build up explains how the character undergoes metamorphosis as he becomes overwhelmed by forces beyond his control.
The masterfully placed minor chords mirror the turmoil and anguish he faces.
But undercutting the closing melody is that punishing bass-line pounding to remind you that the dark side of Walter will crush you if you get in his way.
Love it!

Valentina* – Wolves

A little bit of a mellower mid-week track today which I discovered via the Far From Cyan blog. Valentina is an Italian born singer who moved to the UK at a young age and now resides in London.

Passion Pit – Little Secrets

I can always rely on Massachusetts band Passion Pit to infuse my day with a burst of positivity. This is an oldie, taken from their debut studio album Manners, but it still made me smile when I heard it earlier in the week. It’s hard to ask much more from a song than that.

Radiohead – Karma Police

I have to confess that for a very long time I never really “got” Radiohead. There relentlessly bleak music just wasn’t what I was about. Probably the fact that they were on the 437th artist that I posted probably illustrates this rather neatly.

However, recently I have increasingly been enjoying their music. For the first time (potentially ever) I found myself listened to them by choice. I am unsure if this is a good thing or a bad thing!

Moby – Porcelain

I heard this yesterday for the first time in what seems like a lifetime. It still sounds pretty fresh. I must revisit Play at some stage. It is one of the most memorable albums (and sleeves) of my formative years.
