Yeasayer – Ambling Alp

Don’t know too much about these NYC hipsters. I had heard some friends reference them glowingly in dispatches but never really encountered them until this song. It is completely infectious. Standard behaviour for me but I have been utterly unable to get this out of my head.

Also, the offbeat video is enjoyable.

Theophilius London – Accept the new

I really enjoyed this guy’s album I want you late last year. It sounds fresh, and this is probably my highlight. The album also contains a slight hint of something playfully kitsch which works really well.

Also, is it just me or does it sound a little like Joe Jackson’s Stepping Out features in this track somewhere?

The Antlers – Kettering

I thought this song was befitting of a cool, gray Sunday. I listened to this band a lot after discovering them at the start of last year. While their music can be a little morose (I suppose that’s what you expect from a concept album based on the story of a cancer patient) I find it enjoyable and soothing.

I also had a very entertaining evening about a year ago seeing these guys live in a candlelit church in Islington, a setting that very much enhanced the show.

Passion Pit – Sleepyhead

These guys were one of my big finds from a couple of years ago. This track is full of energy and even if the falsetto singing gives it somewhat of an off-kilter sound it still makes me want to move whenever I hear it.

The Drums – Let’s go surfing

me>
These guys rock. Their live show was probably one of my highlights of 2010. I don’t think I can do there energy justice. If you get the chance to see them – take it.

They have lots of great tunes but this was the first one that really grabbed me. They remind me a little of Joy Division by pulling off the neat trick of combining sombre lyrics and sprightly delivery.

Also, an enjoyable video – simple but effective.

Little Comets – Isles

Don’t know much about these guys other than I like this song. Their wikipedia page suggests they make “Kitchen sink indie” whatever that means!

It is a very enjoyable video containing some interesting imagery. Even if it mirrors the song’s rather grim lyrics – “The streets are bleak, the kids are running wild.” It must be depressing up north!

Metronomy – She Wants

I don’t know much about these guys. I discovered them recently through the wonder of clicking on links suggested by youtube. Google’s search algorithm is all powerful.

I quite like this though, languid and smooth, the melody has inexorably wormed it’s way into my psyche.

Grand Hallway – Raindrops

This feels apt today as I got rather damp on my way home from work this evening.

These guys were on a “best of SXSW” compilation that I picked up whilst in Austin for the festival. I don’t know much about them apart from that they are from Seattle – I think it rains there too sometimes.

Jai Paul – BTSTU

This guy was tipped as one the BBC’s  “Sounds of 2011.”  The list for 2010 was something of a treasure trove.

I certainly enjoyed this track, airy and hypnotic, it has fueled my commute so far this week.
