Junior Boys – Parallel Lines

I found a note I had left myself about this track on my phone tonight. Unfortunately, I have no idea when or where I left the note. Normally, when I first hear a song is a very important factor in deciding my feelings towards it. I guess this proves it’s not a deal breaker if the song comes to me fully-formed so to speak.

Some research into Junior Boys tells me they are a Canadian synth-pop duo – but don’t hold that against them.

I like the measured, hushed tone of this song. It is very soothing and not a little hypnotic. An added bonus here is the eclectic video, which adds a lot.

SBTRKT – Hold On

I clearly have no idea what Dubstep music is. Can anyone enlighten me? This, apparently, is dubstep. I image it to be significantly more energetic and raucous than this. But you live and learn. Clearly I am nowhere near hip enough to get it.

Anyway, labels matter little to me. All that matters is that I really like it. SBTRKT (like subtract I think), apparently performs in the mask he is sporting in the video above.

Yuck – Get Away

This serves as an interesting contrast with yesterday’s post. I really liked it because it had a completely fresh sound. This is also a new song that I have been enjoying by new (by me anyway) band. But what I like about this is it’s familiar feel. It reminds me of Ash, The Smashing Pumpkins and being a teenager. Hearing a new song I love is always thrilling but it can be stimulating in many different ways.
One thing I don’t like however is the band’s name. Yuck? What the hell kind of name is that? GET A REAL NAME.

tUne-yArDs – Bizness

This is just fresh. I haven’t been so excited by a song for a while. It is energetic, rich and textured, and I think the video is great. It kind of reminds me of Jai Paul, in that the sound is so bold and brimming with modernity.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I have been over the past few days (while not distracted by Glastonbuty).

Herman Dune – Tell me something I don’t know

I wanted to post something fresh today after a few days of classic tunes. This song is interesting for having style icon Don Draper (Jon Hamm) in the video. I wish I could be 1% as cool as him.

I also always find something quaint and charming about the slightly stilted way that foreign (Herman Dune are French) bands sing in English. For this phenomenon, also see Phoenix and Napoleon.

Ricardo Villalobos – Fizheuer Zieheuer

I wanted to post something completely different from yesterday. This is a huge dance tune. It is relentless and hypnotic and I have found it to be spellbinding in recent days.

Fatboy Slim and David Byrne feat. Charmaine Clamor – Walk like a woman

This is taken from Here lies love,  a concept album made in collaboration between Fatboy Slim and David Byrne (of Talking Heads). The album charts the rise and fall of Imelda Marcos,  who was first lady of the Phillipines. As I previously mentioned, I am a sucker for songs that double as history lessons or more generally ones that have an interesting concept that makes me think.

The whole album is really stimulating and great in places. It is kind of an opera rapped up in sultry disco beats and features lots of great guest vocals, such as the one here from Charmaine Clamor.

My Brightest Diamond – Dragonfly

A friend and fellow music fan recommended this a couple of weeks ago and I have been enjoying it since. He suggested that the singer has has a little of Jeff Buckley in her vocal style and I would agree with that assessment. The song veers back and forth between being dreamy and urgent and is perfect for said vocal.

Dark Dark Dark – Daydreaming

Dark Dark Dark are hipsters from Minnesota that I have heard and read much praise for recently. Tom Ravenscroft (repeatedly) described them as “the best band in the world.” I don’t know if I would be that gushing about them (shock) but I have certainly been enjoying this track of late. It is sombre and atmospheric and this gives it a compelling quality.

Delorean – Stay Close

This is another uplifting dance tune by a band with a name that is linked to my home land. Perhaps there is a trend to be started? Can anyone suggest some Belfast-centric named bands? I will put my mind to it.

The track is a euphoric slice of summer and it sped my journey home this evening. I also love the fact it was released on Mushroom Pillow Records.
