Lee Fields and The Expressions – Honey Dove

This is one of the best soul songs I heard for the first time in 2011. I know very little about the artist (he doesn’t even have a wikipedia page!!) The vocals are intense and affecting, and overall the song has a timeless sound.

I can’t live without your love, why can’t we make it like it was?

Good Shoes – The way my heart beats

This was recommended to me by a colleague a while ago.It isn’t the usual kind of thing that grabs my attention but I kind of like it. It is energetic and fun.

DTMD – Untitled

This is the best new hip hop song I have heard in ages, probably this year. Whilst that is less of an accolade than it might seem (I find myself somewhat disillusioned with the current scene) this is still pretty great and I have been feeling it all week.

The supreme hook is so fresh and catchy and the rhymes are by Oddisee, a favourite I highlighted earlier in the year. A pretty winning combo.

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Round and Round

This was one of my favourite tunes of last year. I first listened to it because of the intriguing band name but there is something more to it than that. It has a really pleasing retro sound, like a dreamy forgotten favourite from the 70’s.

The utterly random video here is also pretty enjoyable. John Travolta? Check. Aerobics? Check. Naturally. Hipster enough for you? It strangely works well with the song though.

How to dress well – Decisions

This is gentle and mellow – I needed something soothing as the sound of torrential rain pouring down is the other soundtrack to the end of a busy day.
This guy is from Brooklyn and reminds me a little of Grouper, who my buddy Matt highlighted while I was away in Munich and I also quite like.

Miguel featuring J.Cole – All I want is you

This is silky smooth. I don’t know too much about either of the artists but I heard it on the radio yesterday and it grabbed me. I tend to be drawn to things that sound a bit different to whatever I have been listening to at the time. I haven’t been listening to much hip hop or R’nB lately and so the timing was perfect.

Best Coast – Sun was high (so was I)

I haven’t posted much current music recently so it is good to highlight something fresh. This lo-fi, dreamy number has been stuck in my head all day. I also think Best Coast is an excellent name, particularly given their Californian origins. I really like their sound too, like a lazy, hazy day on the beach spent chilling like a villain.

StewRat – Disagreements

Terrible band name, pretty good song. It’s smooth and funky (I think I can hear a Barry White sample somewhere in there). I think these guys are French but otherwise I know almost nothing about them. They were suggested by a good buddy and I couldn’t resist the beat.

Little Dragon – Twice

I first heard of this Swedish band when they collaborated with DJ Shadow on his latest record, The less you know, the better. That track is more up tempo, but this has a quiet charm which is perfect for some mellow Sunday night listening.

Daughter – Home

It feels like it has been a while since I posted something fresh, that’s hot off the press. I heard this for the first time today on 6music, there is something compelling about the vocal that grabbed me.
