Old Belle* – Canary Jane

I like this for two reasons. First and foremost, the song is really enjoyable. It has the timeless air (there is something about the banjo that gives any song this quality) of a song that could have just as easily been performed 150 years ago. Secondly, the video was recorded in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, one of my favourite cities in the world.

The two ladies in the video, Tonya (Vocals) and Ashley (Mandolin) are college friends of mine and I have to give up to them for putting themselves out there. You can find out more about Old Belle here. Keep it up guys!

New Navy* – Zimbabwe (NAT)

This is perhaps a little light but fun nonetheless. Sometimes a jangly guitar riff is enough, particularly on one of the rare days where the sun shines in Dublin and it actually feels summery.

I am not sure though that I would be picking Zimbabwe as my holiday destination of choice just at the moment though…

I don’t know too much about New Navy other than they are Australian. Their radio friendly sound makes me think it won’t be too long before I hear a bit more from them though.

Real Estate – Out of tune

New Jersey band Real Estate are blog favourites. I discovered them during the course of my research last year and have enjoyed posting them a couple of times since.

They have a great washed out, sunny sound. Maybe it’s just me (and the fact I posted them last week) but something about them reminds me of The Beach Boys. I think it’s the fact that the music is pleasant and summery but there seems to be just a little more depth lurking beneath the surface too.

Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang* – Feba (NAT)

After a week of classic tracks and artists New Artist Thursday (as always) brings something a little bit different!

Janka Nabay is a native of Sierra Leone and proponent of Bubu music, a frenetic type of dance music from his home country. The Bubu gang are a band of US collaborators (mostly hip NYC residents) and I think the cultural melting pot produces something pretty great, a little like the Owiny Sigoma Band who are a London/Kenya fusion.

Twin Shadow* – Five Seconds (NAT)

I love this! It’s so energetic and urgent. It also has a wonderful 80’s synth vibe, which is just in my wheelhouse. It makes me want to move.

I have already decided that it’s going to be my weekend anthem.

There is a music video for this song and it’s suitably weird, however it has a 90 second theatrical introduction!

Lee Fields and The Expressions – Wish you were here

North Carolina native Lee Fields has.been releasing music since 1969! This, like all his music is raw. It’s taken from his 2012 album Faithful Man.

How long ‘till I see your face?…

Moodymann – Why do U feel?

This has been my fix so far this week. The sample has completely infected my brain, it is so smooth and hypnotic I can’t listen to it enough.

Moodymann is a Detroit based DJ who seems to take inspiration and influence (as you can hear in this) from many different genres. I posted another track of his earlier in the year and it has a similarly perfect sample.

Cat Power* – Cherokee (Nicolas Jaar remix)

Cat Power is an American singer-songwriter who makes music that is both minimal and sometimes melancholic. I had heard lots of good reports about her but nothing had really moved me too strongly before now.
However, I really like this. It is a remix by American-Chilean DJ Nicolas Jaar and is taken from Cat Power’s upcoming album Sun. It is mellow yet full of gravity, it has been soothing my racing mind this week as I continue to adjust to my new surroundings.

Aesop Rock* – Odessa featuring Dose One (NAT)

2012 has been a year where my affection for hip hop has undergone a big rennaisance. If I am honest I had just about given up on the genre. So it has been very refreshing to stumble across several artists which have gotten me excited.

Aesop Rock is a NYC rapper currently based in San Francisco, and this is taken from his deubt EP Appleseed which was released in 1999.

Shlohmo* – The way U do

I persevered today and this is being written via my phone so please forgive my brevity!

I first heard of this guy through a remix of the LOL Boys track I posted last week. I really like it’s mellow, washed out sound.
