I discovered this whimsical, dreamy gem on the always excellent Far From Cyan Blog a couple of days ago and I have been entranced by it’s lo-fi charm since.
Memoryhouse are from Ontario, Canada and this track is taken from their 2010 EP The Years (a “nostalgic bedroom project” according to Pitckfork).

I discovered Icelandic singer Emilíana Torrini while listening to Tom Ravenscroft’s excellent BBC 6music show over the weekend.
This track is taken from her recently released album Tookah and has that classic Scandinavian-pop sound; One part cool and reserved, one part hypnotic and darkly memerising.

Despite the summer ending, and with it the string of excellent guest posts, I thought it might be fun to continue with the theme of Wednesday covers for at least a while. Look out for a few covers, alternative versions and remixes over the coming weeks.
Today sees Perth, WA band Tame Impala (after a drought that strangely makes it Australian bands on consecutive days) covering the Outkast track Prototype. I really enjoyed the dreamy, hypnotic sound that they capture.

Melbourne band Miami Horror made one of my favourite tracks of 2011 in Holidays (fun song, slightly strange video) but I had rather forgotten about them until a couple of weeks ago. I subsequently revisited Illumination, which both tracks are taken from, and rather enjoyed it.

This is so damn catchy! I have been unable to get it out of my mind all week. It is taken from A$AP Ferg’s recently released album Trap Lord. Ferg is part of the Harlem collective A$AP Mob which also includes the seemingly ubiquitous A$AP Rocky.
I also can’t help but be reminded of Bone Thugs N Harmony’s Crossroads, which is (mostly) a good thing.

In 2011 I went through a real phase of discovering Australian music that got me excited. I was reminded of this fact while sitting beside two scary members of the Aussie boxing team on a flight from Istanbul to Dublin yesterday. Also, it got me thinking that I haven’t heard anything from Down Under in ages that moved me.
This isn’t new but I really liked it at the time and never got around to posting it. The Bamboos are from Melbourne and this is taken from their excellent 2010 album 4.

I don’t know too much about these guys but I heard this track on the radio recently and it knocked me out. I loved the upbeat, dreamy sound.
From what I can tell Tree! are an multimedia art collective (whatever that means) from San Francisco and this track is taken from their recently released Demons EP which is a collaboration with Beat Culture.

This track, from North Carolina native Lee Fields, has been running about my mind for the past couple of weeks. Given that it is taken from Faithful Man, which was released last year, I really enjoyed it’s classic soul sound. It could easily have been recorded in Hitsville USA in it’s pomp.

This is a track from Danish band Boho Dancer, who I discovered via the Guardian Music Blog’s new band of the day feature.
I find the rather windswept video to be fitting for the track, which mercifully isn’t a Beach Boys cover.

I thought this track from London dream pop band Vondelpark was a good way to start the week. It’s mellow, quiet sound is just what I need, even more than a normal Monday, having spent a weekend carousing and catching up with old friends in London.
It is taken from their album Seabed, which was released earlier in the year.
