Boz Scaggs* – Miss Riddle

I am not really sure how to follow Rory’s post from yesterday!

This is nice and smooth, some mellow mid week listening. I am a sucker for horns. Interesting note about Boz Scaggs (I didn’t know this until just now) is that he was a member and sometime lead singer of The Steve Miller Band.

So cool, so clear, so nonchalant, so absolutely what I want…

Nina Simone – Mr. Bojangles

Some more mellow Sunday night listening. There are several versions of this track but this is my favourite (Nina is hard to beat). There is a wisfulness to it that feels heartfelt and I find it rather moving. I guess that is the test of any good music, that it makes you feel something.

Taj Mahal* – Satisfied ‘n Tickled Too

Taj Mahal is an interesting artist whose work spans many decades and genres. He made music, such as this, that transformed the blues. You can really hear the Caribbean influence here, it is perfectly languid.

The lil’ red hen said to the lil’ red rooster “Rooster, you don’t come round my chicken shack as much as you used to”…

In other news I discovered this interesting blog: http://www.sleeveface.com/ Has anyone seen it before? It has a certain random charm. Something to aspire to for me.

Big Joe Turner – Shake, Rattle and Roll

I think this is just a perfect song. I love it’s old fashioned sound.

Muddy Waters – Mannish Boy

Muddy Waters is a bad ass. Not least because I think Muddy Waters is an all time great name for a blues man.

He wrote the song that gave The Rolling Stones got their name. Check this amazing video. It is great not least for the contrast between Muddy – poised in an immaculate 3-piece and Mick Jagger – hyperactive in a red shell suit.

If you like Soul or Blues I also recommend checking out Cadillac Records. It is the story of Chess Records (Muddy Waters, Etta James, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf…). I thoroughly enjoyed it and Muddy’s character just about steals the show in my opinion.

Nina Simone – My baby just cares for me

This is smooth as silk and refreshingly old school.

The video is a little inane but at the same time it complements the simplicity of the song.
