Naught by nature* – Hip hop hooray (GPF)

This isn’t too substantial but it is an old fashioned party tune. A hip hop banger from New Jersey’s Naughty by nature, which I think is a pretty amazing name for a band.

Royce da 5’9* – Boom (GPF)

This mid-90’s Hip Hop banger from Detroit rapper Royce da 5’9 is one of my favourite party tunes. The beat is provided by hip hop legend and genius producer DJ Premier.

I am over in London for the weekend for a friend’s birthday and hope to hear some stuff like this tonight. This is for you Jimmy, here’s to a good night!

Aphex Twin* – Alberto Balsam

I caught up with regular guest contributor Matt over the weekend who is my main man for all things minimal and mellow having introduced me to Grouper, who has subsequently become a blog favourite.

Mellow is definitely what I like to aim for on Sunday evenings and this certainly fits that mould well. Richard D. James who is better know as Aphex Twin is a prominent DJ and maker of ambient music. Matt also pointed out that there is a pretty good steel band version of this track.

Salt-n-Pepa featuring En Vogue* – Whatta Man (GPF)

This is rather cheesy (it is Friday) but has an irresistible groove. I have to confess that I was out for a run (don’t laugh) during the week and when this came on my MP3 player it put a spring in my step.

Björk – Play Dead

I am an unashamedly massive Björk fan. She is my favourite non-Motown female vocalist. Beyond that she seems like the kind of person I would like to have a beer with. While that’s not a particularly important quality for me when I think about music, it’s a plus. I imagine that it certainly wouldn’t be a boring evening!
This gem is taken off her first album Debut, which I can’t believe is nearly 20 years old (I am sure I still have the cassette which I stole off my Dad somewhere)! It is typical of her work in that it has a soaring urgency that I find utterly compelling.

Beth Orton* – She cries your name

Norfolk singer Beth Orton was the first gig I ever went to, at the Queen’s Festival in Belfast in what must have been 2000 or 2001. On reflection it was something or a random choice.

She came into my head this week for some strange reason that I can’t quite put my finger on. I can’t say that I listen to her too often these days but I really enjoyed revisiting this track. The slightly off kilter strings that start the track still make for a killer intro.

Birds which scream for territory can learn to sing euphorically…

De La Soul – Breakadawn

2012 has definitely seen me fall back in love with Hip Hop, probably my first musical love. And while I have posted quite a bit of their music already this year it seems fitting to keep returning to De La Soul the band that really began it all for me, when I purchased their seminal 3 feet high and rising album. Nothing has ever sounded the same since.

This is just smooth, which is just what’s required for a Sunday night while I gather myself together for a busy week ahead. Also, listen out for the choice Michael Jackson sample here.

Third Eye Blind* – Semi-charmed life (GPF)

Apologies for the interruption to normal blogging service. I am back from Barcelona and just about in one piece. It’s a fun city, if a little sketchy. I did manage to find some time to relax too, which was welcome. I could get used to chilling by the water and enjoying the sunshine!

This is a song that reminds me of school. If the mark of a good song is that it makes you want to hum the tune after hearing it then this qualifies in spades.

Tindersticks – I know that loving

Nottingham band Tindersticks were one of the first that lead me to realise that a whole world of music existed beyond that which I heard played on the radio as I was growing up. Lead singer Stuart Staple’s distinctive nasal tones have provided some of my favourite vocals.

This track is taken from the well titled Simple Pleasure album, which was released in 1999. I posted another track from it last year, and it still remains a favourite it many years after I stumbled across it while raiding my dad’s record collection.

If I could only get out of the water, if I could only get myself clean…

Brownstone* – If you love me (GPF)

I heard this a few weeks ago and have been meaning to post it since. It is so darn catchy. I know it’s a bit naff but it is from the mid-90’s sweet spot for which I am an utter sucker!

Brownstone are (was going to write were but then just discovered via their wikipedia page that they have reformed) an all girl group from LA. I have to confess knowing exactly nothing about them beyond this song, but what a song it is!

Have a great weekend.
