Shabazz Palaces* – Swerve

Hip Hop has undergone a big renaissance in my affections recently after I had just about given up hope on it. Artists such as Oddisee, DTMD, Roc Marciano and Jay Electronica have both excited me and restored some of my faith in the current scene.

This track is super fresh and I love the sound, it’s funky and slightly eccentric. It reminds me a little of Bay Area rappers such as Blackaliscious, Lyrics Born or The Coup. Additionally, I happen to think that Shabazz Palaces is an excellent name.

Diana Ross – Ain’t no mountain high enough

I heard this on Saturday night and was reminded of what a fantastic song it is. There are several great versions of it and I struggle to decide which is my favourite. I imagine it was very bold in it’s day with the spoken word passages and heavy strings. It is so joyous and uplifting it is hard not to smile when you hear it. Also, it highlights what an utter hero Diana Ross is. What a voice!

A whisper in the noise* – Black Shroud

This is quiet and soothing, perfect for a Sunday evening with the sobering prospect of Monday morning looming. This is particularly welcome today as I am feeling the effects of a raucous evening last night celebrating a friend’s birthday.

It reminds me a little of The Antlers both in it’s style and dark subject matter. I don’t know too much about these guys but have been enjoying them very much since coming across them a few days ago.

College featuring Electric Youth* – A real hero

This is taken from the soundtrack of the movie Drive. I had been meaning to check it out for ages as several buddies had referred to it glowingly. I finally got round to it a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. Now I just need to see the movie…

I like the mellow vibe here and the classic, 80’s sound.

TLC* – No Scrubs (GPF)

I am not too proud of my affection for this song but I guess that’s the name of the game on Fridays. In my defence when I first heard it I wasn’t old enough to know better. In fairness it has stood the test of time pretty well. Apart perhaps for the ridiculous, OTT video!

Also, TLC must be an all-time great name for a modern R’n’B group.

Funeral Suits* – All those friendly people

I was sitting beside the singer of this band at a wedding in December. When he told me he was in a band but I assumed they were small time. I was surprised to hear them played on 6music this week. Good for them.

The track is quite fun too. It’s simple, youthful and easy on the ear. Slightly strange video though, a little reminscent of Miami Horror.

Neil Young – The needle and the damage done

Happy leap day everyone.

For no reason in particular I have been listening to Neil Young all day. He is such a beast! What an amazing back catalogue he has. His voice is so affecting; wistful and fragile it adds so much to his music. When I am searching for something mellow he is always near the top of my list.

The Temptations – Ain’t too proud to beg

I was out for dinner at an excellent new restaurant on Saturday night. If you ever find yourself around Carnaby Street I would highly recommend it. Not only were they serving up some choice Barbeque food but there were also playing some choice Soul music. This is just one example of many. Great, classic Motown tune.

Field Music* – A new town

Sunderland band Field Music aren’t one I know much about. I heard them recently and really enjoyed this. It is nice and relaxed and has a killer bass. It reminds me a little of My Morning Jacket, which is a very good thing.

Slowdive* – Souvlaki Space Station (Matt Graham guest post)

Shoegaze

Shoegaze is a sub genre of rock from the early 90’s, in which vocals play second fiddle to melodies which were made on heavily distorted or effected guitars. The name partially comes from the fact that when performed live the guitarists in the bands spent all their time looking at the floor so that they could mess around with the different effects that they were using. The music produced by shoegaze bands was seen as being self-indulgent by many, which to be fair  is understandable and it is not a style of music that everyone will like.

Another name used by some of its detractors was the scene which celebrates itself, as the bands who made up the scene were friendly with each other and would often go to each others gigs. I’m not too sure why that was seen as a bad thing, but I guess the music journalists at the time, wanted something else to write about besides the music, hence the relish with which the Oasis vs Blur saga was reported on.When grunge and britpop increased in popularity, these became the de facto styles that all rock bands had to play and so shoegaze music was quickly ignored. Two of the most famous bands which were of the shoe gaze genre are My Bloody Valentine, who I have guest posted before, and Ride whose album Nowhere, and the track Vapour Trail especially, is highly regarded.

Having mentioned both of those bands, the song that I have chosen is from the album Souvlaki by the band Slowdive, and the track is called Souvlaki Space Station, which I see as an archetypal shoegaze track, i.e. guitars with heavy effects and difficult to hear vocals which contribute to the melody rather than stand out from it.
