Primal Scream – Loaded

Another Glastonbury post. These guys TORE IT UP last night on the other stage.  I wish I had been there (maybe without the mud).

Taken from the seminal Screamadelica album. Emerging from the Acid House scene of the late 80’s these guys were one of the bands that paved the way for Britpop bands that were to follow. This, however, is much richer than much of the music that produced era produced.

DJ Shadow – Midnight in a perfect world

Glastonbury Festival is on this weekend so I thought I would post 3 songs by artists playing there. DJ Shadow is a pioneer of this genre of music and I found Endtroducing to be captivating when I discovered it a few years after it’s release. It is otherworldly and rich – a very rewarding listen.

The Source featuring Candi Staton – You’ve got the love

My fad for Britpop has moved into a fixation with club classics. This tune is ALL TIME. The vocal is stunning, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end whenever I hear it.

Aside

Dennis Brown – Money in my pocket

Classic tune from the crown prince of reggae. It may be my favourite reggae tune of all time. I love how mellow it is, it always puts me in a relaxed mood.

Herman Dune – Tell me something I don’t know

I wanted to post something fresh today after a few days of classic tunes. This song is interesting for having style icon Don Draper (Jon Hamm) in the video. I wish I could be 1% as cool as him.

I also always find something quaint and charming about the slightly stilted way that foreign (Herman Dune are French) bands sing in English. For this phenomenon, also see Phoenix and Napoleon.

Aside

Bronski Beat – Smalltown Boy

This is simply a perfect 80’s pop song. The synth is startlingly good, and combined with the yearning vocal give the track a haunting quality which is very arresting.
Not sure what is going on with the random video here, but it was the best quality sound I could find.

Aside

Althea and Donna – Uptown top ranking

Another track I have wanted to post for ages. It is a classic tunes with an all time great riff. It is languid. funky and irresistible when heard in the vicinity of a dance floor.

Aside

Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz – Deja Vu (Uptown Baby)

Was in the mood today for some old school hip hop and this fits the bill nicely. It has the characteristic of a club anthem – it makes you want to MOVE.

The Specials – Ghost Town

This is for my buddy is off on a 6 month holiday to Australia next week. We were reminded of it in work today by this article.

Good luck for your trip Matty.

Small Faces – Itchycoo Park

Sometimes, when a DJ speaks to you there is nothign you can do but take notice. I was out for a beer with a couple of old friends last night and I heard this for the first time in ages. Said DJ hit the nail on the head and who am I to argue?

It’s all too beautiful…
